Amy Winehouse - Blake Wood

Amy Winehouse by Blake Wood is a rare and deeply personal portrait of one of the most recognisable musicians of her generation, published by Taschen in 2018.

When 22-year-old American photographer Blake Wood moved to London, a mutual friend introduced him to Amy Winehouse in 2008. The pair formed an immediate bond, becoming close friends and creative collaborators during a period when Winehouse was at the height of her fame and under relentless media scrutiny. Over the following two years, Wood photographed her everywhere from Paris and Camden Town to the beaches of St. Lucia, capturing moments that existed far beyond the public image created by the tabloids.

Across intimate colour and black-and-white photographs, Winehouse appears relaxed, playful, and completely at ease in front of Wood’s camera. These are photographs of Amy as Wood knew her, not the headline, the paparazzi subject, or the troubled celebrity, but a funny, creative, and caring young woman.

With text by Nancy Jo Sales, Amy Winehouse offers a rare glimpse behind the mythology surrounding the singer and into the friendship and creative relationship between two young artists. A beautiful and unusually intimate document of Winehouse away from the glare of celebrity.
