A History of Sex by Andres Serrano was published in conjunction with Serrano’s touring exhibition from 1997 to 1998. This first English edition was limited to only 3,000 copies. A History of Sex is a provocative collection from one of contemporary art’s most controversial figures. Known for Piss Christ and his work with Metallica, Serrano continues to challenge ideas of beauty, faith, and the body in this striking volume. Despite its title, the book reaches beyond eroticism to explore the human condition in all its sacred and profane forms. The result is a body of work that walks a fine line between fascination and discomfort.

The Melbourne showing of Serrano's work was divided between the National Gallery of Victoria and the Kirkcaldy Davies Galleries and became a lightning rod for debate over art and censorship. After an unsuccessful legal attempt by Archbishop George Pell to block Piss Christ, the piece was vandalised, leading to heightened security and national controversy.

A History of Sex remains both a companion to that infamous exhibition and a testament to Serrano’s enduring fascination with taboo, faith, and the physical realities of life. It stands as a striking and unsettling document of late 20th-century art and its power to provoke and reveal.
