Carlo Mollino: Photographs 1934-1973

Carlo Mollino: Photographs 1934–1973, published by Silvana in 2018, is the most comprehensive survey of Carlo Mollino’s photographic work, bringing together more than 450 images spanning nearly four decades.

Best known as an architect and designer, Mollino was also a photographer, writer, skier, racing driver and stunt pilot, and photography occupied a particularly important place within his creative world. He used the camera both to document his architecture and daily life and as a medium for experimentation, moving freely between formal architectural studies, personal photographs and the erotic Polaroids of his later years.

The book also explores Mollino’s writing and thinking around photography, including his influential 1949 photobook Message from the Darkroom, placing his work within the wider history of photography and its emergence as an art form. Featuring photographs never previously published, this is a seriously comprehensive look at one of Mollino’s most intriguing and often overlooked practices.
