Janet by Shoji Otake (1974) is a signed first edition published by Nippon Camera, Tokyo, and remains one of the most distinctive photobooks from Otake’s career.
Entirely dedicated to actress and model Janet Hatta, the book presents a striking body of work combining saturated colour photography with rich black-and-white prints. Hatta is portrayed across the American Southwest, moving between urban settings, desert landscapes, and studio environments, alongside experimental compositions and artistic nude studies.
Shoji Otake (1920–2015), an influential figure in postwar Japanese photography, was known for his work with performers and portraiture, later focusing on female subjects and the nude. In Janet, this approach becomes especially intimate, documenting a creative collaboration that explores transformation and artistic process.
Visually rich and carefully constructed, Janet stands as both a cultural document of its time and an important example of Otake’s photographic work.
